Rhythm & Blues

From the late 40's and through the 50's onwards, a new branch of popular music was formed that became known as Rhythm and Blues. Initially a style that was created as an answer to Bebop's lack of popularity, this was music that shared a lot in common with the Swing era: dance-oriented, horn sections, heavy backbeats and instrumental riffs. It borrowed from Gospel, Blues and Jazz and used the 12 bar blues form and the 32 bar pop form.
