With reference to weekend workouts, the focus here – in terms of context – is on band/ensemble playing; although Brazilian Jazz Guitar may often be approached in a solo style such as Classical Guitar. So, the focus here is not on solo style guitar playing but rather how the style relates to a guitarist’s primary roles: lead and rhythm.
Brazilian Jazz is an amalgamation of Jazz harmony and distinct Brazilian rhythms that are related to dance. Here we will focus on: Samba and Bossa Nova.
The Samba has a two beat feel which is usually expressed as 2/4 or 2/2. The bass maintains an almost constant alternation on the basic pulse, while the melody is often off the beat (syncopated).
