Hi, I’m Michael Meyer. I’m a trombone player from Cherry Hill, New Jersey now residing in Glasgow. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Theory and Teacher’s Certification from Temple University in Philadelphia. I’ve played in and led bands on cruise ships and different theme parks in the States such as Busch Gardens in Williamsburg, Virginia. After teaching primary-aged children in Miami, I moved to Glasgow. I now make time to play in various big bands and function bands, mainly in the Central Belt of Scotland. I’m the assistant director and lead bone player of the Glasgow-based Zig Zag Big Band. We like to play a lot of randomness, basically turning the big band format on its head. For example, a couple of my arrangements are a big band version of Nirvana’s Come as You Are and a Christmas Walking in the Air, in 7/4…
Along those lines, I have arranged a great many songs for theme parks, cruise ships, theatre productions, full orchestras, vocal groups, horn sections, and any type of group that needs charts. Despite the big band examples in the previous paragraph, most of my charts are more of the straight-ahead fashion, and I enjoy writing in every style. I have also in the past 5 years started sporadically writing original big band compositions, which is great fun!
I make time to work with young players in the Samba ya Bamba Youth Street Band, also in Glasgow. I’m comfortable giving trombone lessons to all ages and am fully disclosed for this purpose. I especially like tailoring my lessons to the ability and interest of the player.
So basically, I’m available for:
Trombone Lessons- Besides face-to-face in Glasgow, I’m happy to delve into the online thing as well and tailor lessons to suit
Arranging/Composing/Orchestration- I can write what you need or give lessons on how to write for a given ensemble. I can also help you with any existing piece of music you’re working on.
Playing- I can play in any type of band setting and have the equipment to record any trombone parts you need from my home.
Here’s just one excerpt of an original composition of mine called Snap Samba for big band and optional female voice:
